Athens Veterans Parade / Limestone Co.

The Alabama Veterans Museum and Archives will host the Athens/Limestone Co. Veterans Day Parade on Nov. 5 at 11:00 a.m. The queue starts at Athens Secondary School from 9:30 am. Contact Yvonne Dempsey at (256)-431-3213. or Sandy Thompson at (256)-771-7578. Register before Wednesday, November 2.

Limestone Democratic Conference Election Event

The Limestone County Alabama Democratic Conference will be sponsoring an election event to meet and greet candidates on Saturday, November 5, 2022, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Lincoln Bridgeforth Park located at 815 Westview Avenue Athens, Al 35611. We will be handing out sample ballots voting, have Soul Food vendors available, run a membership drive, and raffle off a 55-inch Vizio TV. Raffle tickets will be sold from 11 a.m. to noon. The winning TV raffle ticket will be drawn at 12:15 p.m. Join us for fun and unity. A variety of musical genres will be played by our disc jockey, Quincy Malone aka DJ-Q. Registration for transportation to polling stations for seniors and persons with disabilities will be provided.

Coffee Call, hosted by the Alabama Veterans Museum & Archives and sponsored by the Limestone County Farmers Federation, will take place between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m., Saturday, November 5, at our location at 114 W. Pryor Street.


Get dirty in the library

Limestone County Master Gardeners are offering a free presentation on “Strawbale Gardening,” November 8 from 11 a.m. to noon at the Athens-Limestone Public Library. Soozi Pliny will speak.

Athens Garden Club Flower Arrangement Seminar

The Athens Garden Club is delighted to invite you to watch and learn about Matt’s flower arrangement from the Athens Florist on Wednesday, November 9 at 9:30 a.m. at Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church. Come as a guest for the fun and camaraderie.


Stuff-A-Truck, benefiting LCCI, will take place Saturday, November 12 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at First National Bank at the southwest corner of Highway 72 East and Lindsey Lane. Please post the flyer in your church and on your social media or websites so that it receives the highest levels of recognition. Stuff-A-Truck is a great way to inspire people in Limestone County and the City of Athens to get involved in helping to feed those in need right here at home.

King’s Table Thanksgiving Drive

The King’s Table Community Annual Thanksgiving Meal – Drive Through will be held on Saturday 11/12 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at New Life Church 2314 South Hine Stree, Athens. Quarterly meeting of Friends of the Archives

The Friends of the Archives will hold their quarterly meeting on Tuesday, November 15, 2022 at 5:00 p.m. at the Limestone County Archives office at 102 W. Washington Street. Turkey Contest Entry

Women Empowering Women in Alabama will give away 100 turkeys on November 19. People can register for the Turkey Giveaway every Tuesday and Thursday from 2-4 p.m. until Nov. 11 at 17200 Lucas Ferry Road (Fresh Wind Church).

North Pole Ride Sponsors

Athens-Limestone County Tourism is accepting sponsors for 6-foot Christmas trees to be featured in the annual North Pole Walk in Athens Big Springs Memorial Park. This year we are able to offer electric LED lighting for our sponsors. We will no longer accept solar lamps, only electric LED lamps. Referrals are still only $100 and are available until November 15. Digital Literacy Course

The Athens-Limestone County Public Library will host a series of digital literacy classes in conjunction with Calhoun Community College and Drake State Community & Technical College. The courses will boost your digital confidence and provide you with the skills and training needed in today’s job market. Houston Memorial Library Daily Book Sale

Houston Memorial Library and Museum, 101 North Houston Street in Athens, holds a daily book sale. The bookshop, the museum and the library are open Monday to Friday and the first Saturday of the month from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

After School Feeding Program

Women Empowering Women of Alabama, in partnership with FreshWind Christian Fellowship, provides free after-school meals to students. Meals are available from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. More information: Janice Williams, (256) 233-5995.

The Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church Pantry will be open from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the third Saturday of each month at 1911 Hine St., Athens. Clients must provide proof of at least one of the following: eligibility to receive supplementary food assistance (SNAP/food stamps); eligibility for temporary assistance to needy families; eligibility to receive Supplemental Security Income; an income at or below 130% of the federal poverty level; or special circumstances. Eligibility forms provided at distribution site. Must have a valid ID or driver’s license. Only one distribution per household while stocks last. Monetary and food donations accepted. Virtual Exercise Class

The Limestone County Council on Aging presents a virtual exercise class from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays and Fridays via Zoom. The classes are called SAIL, which stands for Stay Active and Independent for Life. More information: (256) 233-6412.

Cemetery cleaning

City cemeteries

The City of Athens reminds residents and families of the following regarding its cemeteries: No flowers or decorations are permitted on the grounds between April 1 and October 31, except following a burial; placement of flowers acceptable all year round on the monuments, at their base or at the fire hydrants; fresh flowers will be removed one week after the funeral; silk flowers will be removed 21 days after a funeral; cemetery director’s approval required before planting flowers, shrubs, trees or sod; city ​​staff will remove any trees or shrubs deemed harmful to adjacent land or tomb openings; and worn, tattered, or damaged American flags will be removed and disposed of properly.

Bethel Cemetery

Bethel Cemetery Annual monetary contributions for the upkeep of the cemetery are due. If you have family members buried in Bethel Cemetery, send donations to Tommy Sprague at 25917 Pepper Road in Athens. Total funding for the cemetery comes from contributions.
