Howard’s Earl Thompson celebrated his 90th birthday on September 21 and his family is hosting an open house to celebrate his birthday. The open house will be held tomorrow, September 24, at Howard United Methodist Church from 2-4 p.m. Anyone who knows Earl is welcome to come.

Earl has been a lifelong resident of Howard and graduated from Howard High. He is retired from Cerro in Bellefonte. Earl is the father of seven children, has 14 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Earl is a Howard Area Lion and has coordinated Howard’s blood drives for the Red Cross for years. Earl is a member of the Howard Fire Company and every year leads the fire company’s indoor garage sale fundraiser with his loyal band of volunteers affectionately known as the “Earl’s Garage Sale Crew.”

Summit Hill Wesleyan Church is holding an auction tomorrow, September 24, for the Yoder family. Donations of new or used items in excellent condition are required for the auction and can be dropped off at the church pavilion today just prior to the auction.

Many items have already been donated and food will be available at the auction, which begins at 9 a.m.

The auction will benefit the family of Emanuel Yoder who lost his battle with cancer in August. Emanuel’s wife, Jess, and their daughters, twins Autumn, Alexis and Mackenzie will appreciate your support.

Country Jam will be held at the Howard Fire Station on Sunday afternoon from 2-6 p.m. Bring a snack or covered dish to share. Bring your instrument if you play or sing along to the many tunes throughout the afternoon. A donation basket is passed to benefit the fire company to enable use of the hall for the monthly Country Jam, which takes place on the fourth Sunday afternoon of each month.


The Lions Club desperately needs a freezer to store frozen foods from the food bank. If you have a freezer that you would be willing to donate, or if you could provide funds that Lions could use to purchase a new freezer, please contact Lion Ron Davy at 570-962-2407. The Lions will also take care of picking up the freezer at your home! Your donation would be tax deductible and a freezer (or two) will certainly help Lions continue to provide frozen foods to families receiving food assistance.

The Lions distribute an extra box of food on September 30 from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the old Beech Creek Elementary School. The food bank distribution will take place Oct. 3 for Center County residents and Oct. 17 for Clinton County residents. Don’t wait until 3:00 p.m. to get the food aid because if people don’t come regularly or if it’s raining, the Lions can close early. Bring back your sturdy boxes so they can be reused for each distribution.

Lions Bingo will take place on October 13 and 27. Doors and kitchen open at 5:30 p.m. Bingo games start at 6:30 p.m.

The Lions will have their food trailers at Bald Eagle State Park on Oct. 22 for Howard Fire Company’s Punkin Chunkin.


The seniors residing at Fox Hill Senior Apartments have been busy making crafts and will be hosting a craft show and flea market of their wares on Saturday, October 15 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Unique handicrafts will be on offer, as well as flea market antiques, paintings, puzzles and more.

Stop by to support this group at their craft show and flea market.

The apartment complex is located on Rockrimmon Drive along Benner Pike just outside of Bellefonte (near J&E Guns).

Last chance to order your subs from Jack. Pre-orders should be called to Jack before Monday morning as he heads for all the supplies needed to fill the orders that have been placed.

Jack’s Subs will be available (pre-order only) on October 28, 29, 30, and 1. Jack will create submarines as a fundraiser for the Yarnell Community Center. Submarines can be picked up from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the community center.

Prices are $7 for the ham; $9 for turkey and $10 for roast beef. A cheesesteak sub will cost $12. Sodas and chips will also be available for purchase. If you would like to place an order, you can call Jack at 814-699-0548.

Yarnell resident Jack Miller does not plan to reopen his store, but is instead doing subs to help offset the costs of fuel oil and other things that will be needed at the Yarnell Community Center.

Bring your abundance of plastic bags and Jack will see that they are heading to Yarnell Church for their recycling project which is also happening right now!



The annual Truckers 4 Hope weekend to benefit cystic fibrosis research will be held at the Clinton County Fairgrounds September 23-25.

Plan now to attend the exciting events happening every day. Friday will feature Monster Trucks, Cornhole Tournament and Long Haul Paul on stage at 8 p.m., followed by Tony Justice at 9 p.m.

Saturday is children’s day from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Kids can get into the tractor pull pedal which kicks in at 2 p.m. No more Cornhole competition at 3 p.m. There’s a trucking light show at 8 p.m. the stage at 9 p.m.

Sunday presents Bull Ride Mania at 2 p.m.

Milesburg Car and Craft Show takes place tomorrow, September 24, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The show is held in the Market St. neighborhood of Milesburg.

Aaronsburg will be hosting a craft show in conjunction with their harvest festival on October 1-2.

Howard VFW Fall Bazaar will be at the club on October 8.

The Friendship Community Center at Beech Creek will host a Fall Bazaar on October 21 (6-9 p.m.) and October 22 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Vendor tables are $10. Reserve yours by calling Sandi at 570-962-2397.
