I’m a gardening whiz – how to avoid buying the wrong product that could kill your lawn

AN EXPERT claimed that using just one wrong treatment could even kill your lawn.

A lush green space is what every gardening enthusiast dreams of – but sometimes, even despite the best intentions, we might, in fact, be doing more harm than good, a prodigy has revealed.

Speaking to L’Expressthe owner of JayRock LawnCare & Gardening warned fellow enthusiasts to be careful when sowing garden seeds and the treatments you use.

According to the Morayshire-based whizz, this should be done “when the ground temperature is above 8 degrees on average”.

“You can’t do this on a day on the calendar, you have to consider the weather,” he added.

A good time, it turns out, is right after scarification and aeration.

“Whether with a spring tine rake or a scarifying machine, lifting thatch and moss from your lawn will allow your lawn to breathe.

The expert added, “Remember that grass seeds need to be in contact with the ground to have the best chance of germinating.”

The gardening guru also warned Brits not to use the wrong herbicide on their lawns.

“A simple Weedol for lawns, which you can get commercially, will help you in this situation.

“Make sure you use a selective herbicide, a non-selective herbicide will kill your lawn.”

This, he explained, is because a non-selective herbicide will not be specific when it comes to killing plants.

These products will kill any plant the chemicals come into contact with.

Often used on industrial sites or in an area where someone wants to, for example, lay out a driveway, these herbicides are used to clean the plant sites entirely, leaving absolutely nothing behind.

However, there is also a range of selective herbicides on the market aimed at specific weeds – these will not affect or ruin the rest of your lawn.

“Don’t forget your PPE and keep your animals out of the area for 24 hours,” he reminded.
